Types of external influences

A key document which is the prerequisite for every occupancy permit-related proceedings as well as for every regular electrical equipment inspection. Few people can correctly determine the external influences in premises with explosion hazard. We can do that.

Individual external influences can be divided into three main groups designated with letters:

  • A - external influence environment
  • B - utilization
  • C - construction of buildings

Codes of external influences

A - external influence environment

AA

Ambient temperature

AA1 to AA8

AB

atmospheric conditions

AB1 to AB8

AC

Altitude

AC1 / AC2 (in Czech Republic always AC1 - below 2000 m)

AD

Presence of water

AD1 to AD8 (influences the IP protection)

AE

Presence of solid bodies

AE1 to AE6

AF

Presence of corrosive or polluting substances

AF1 to AF4

AG

Mechanical load – shock

AG1 to AG3

AH

Mechanical load – vibrations

AH1 to AH3

AJ

Other mechanical loads

(not determined)

AK

Presence of flor and/or molds

AK1 or AK2

AL

Presence of fauna

AL1 or AL2

AM1 to AM41

Electromagnetic, electrostatic, or ionizing influences

determined at places where such influences can be expected

AM8

radiated magnetic fields

AM8-1 or AM8-2

AM9

Electric field

AM9-1 to AM9-4

AM31

Electrostatic discharge

AM31-1 to AM31-4

AN

Solar radiation intensity

AN1 to AN3

AP

Seismic effects

AP1 to AP4 (AP1 only in CZ)

 AQ

Lightning level and density

AQ1 to AQ3

 AR

Movement of air

AR1 to AR3

 AS

Wind

AS1 to AS3

   B - utilization

 BA

Capability of persons

BA1 to BA5

 BB

Electrical resistance of human body

(not determined)

 BC

Contact of persons with earth potential

BC1 to BC4

 BD

Conditions of evacuation in case of emergency

BD1 to BD4

 BE

Nature of processed or stored materials

BE1 - No significant risks
or:
BE2N1 to BE2N3 – Fire risks
and/or:
BE3N1 to BE3N3 - Explosion risks
and/or:
BE4 – Contamination risks

C - construction of buildings

 CA1

Construction materials

CA1 or CA2

 CB

Building design

CB1 to CB4

Whenever the external influence BE2Nx is determined, this fact has to be reflected, among others, in the fire protection documentation.

Whenever the external influence BE3Nx is determined, this fact has to be reflected, among others, in the Explosion Protection Document.

Knowledge is important for environment determination

For example, it is easy to classify the entire hall as the environment with explosion hazard than looking for the places with real risk of explosive atmosphere occurrence, however, this can turn into a problem if you are forced to nonsensical replacement of electrical wiring that will cost you hundreds of thousands.
